Description

I have met this species sister before but not this species, I am pretty sure that this fits into the description of the leaf of C. oblonga. It will be on the list of revisit for later in the year. Any feedback?

The distinctiveness of the two New Zealand species is doubtful but, as things stand, C. oblonga is confined to the northern North Island. The leaf shape of C. rotundifolia is quite variable and the shapes in these photos fit within its range. You can often find a range of shapes from rotund to oblong within a single population of C. rotundifolia.

Fair comment Jeremy. The two species (?) are distinguished by distribution rather than appearance. Just as you have specimens down that way that closely resemble C. oblonga, so we have specimens up here that a southerner would ID as C. rotundifolia.

Looking at Matt's photos I could have happily identified them as being of C. oblonga, other than knowing that, according to current understanding, C. oblonga is not found in the lower North Island.

Interesting feedback. Great to know that the different species(maybe) are distinguished by distribution that makes my life a lot easier, thanks. Twas a brief visit to a new site for me so i will spend some more time in this area as i think there may lots more to see. Cheers again Jeremy & Bill.
