It's a good match for Eryngium planum and doesn't fit Eryngium amesthystinum, the other Eryngium known wild in NZ with blue capitula.

Eryngium planum is currently regarded as a casual wild part of the NZ flora, as opposed to fully naturalised. See the Allan Herbarium collections. Many casuals go on to be fully naturalised in time, and some continue on to become weeds.

I expect this would be well worth collecting for a herbarium specimen.

Hello! I am extremely interested in this plant and would love a specimen for our herbarium. We only have 2 specimens of Eryngium planum and one (very old) specimen of Eryngium amesthystinum here at the Allan Herbarium.
I tried to visit the locality myself, but it is fenced off and I couldn’t get into the property.
I would really appreciate, if you could grab a specimen for me! Please can you either drop it off her in Lincoln at Landcare Research or pop it into an envelope and send it to us (Allan Herbarium, Landcare Research, PO Box 69040, Lincoln 7640? – thank you very much. Ines.

Thanks jon_sullivan!

Ines-nz - I would love to get a specimen! When would be the best time to drop it off? I work out that way and usually finish at about 4:30.

Dear Reinderw,
would be fabulous if you could get me a specimen! I am at work (Allan Herbarium, Landcare Research, Lincoln) every day from 7:00 am until about 2 PM. But you can drop the sample off at our reception any time before 4:30 pm. If you come while I am at work, I can show you around and the Erigeron samples we have already in the collection.

Are you ever around on weekends? Because I would certainly like to have a look around, and I am not free on weekdays between 7 and 2 unless the weather is absolutely atrocious.

Definitely Eryngium planum. I have now a specimen for the Herbarium (CHR 644048) - thank you William!

Great.

You are most welcome! When will it be ready?

The specimen is still in the plant press (dryer), but we have already accessioned (databased) it to the herbarium as CHR 644048. Feel free and visit "your" specimen one day, but it may take a few weeks before it is mounted! Especially since I will be away overseas for the next 3 weeks.
Thanks again! Best wishes! Ines - P.S.: Always keen to accession interesting plants to the herbarium as permanent physical record!

Thanks for the accession number, @ines-nz

I've added it above to our field CHR (Allan Herbarium) number.
