Scrappy, low density plants growing on sandy mud in the upper estuary. Also visible: manawa (grey mangrove), mud crab burrows and the occasional mud snail Amphibola crenata.

The red zig-zag pattern seen in http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/9048211 is just visible toward the base of several of the smaller specimens.
