Description

Obtained reef rock for geology analysis and took macro photos of species.

Dennis Gordon, NIWA helped the ID and noted that some bryozoans can be recognised from colony form and colour. Most, however, require close-up shots of individual zooids so as to see diagnostic features. (The macro photo I sent was not close enough!) Dennis noted that the purplish colour of most Bitectipora species is post-mortem. In life, colonies can be bright yellow with yellow tentacles, especially at growing edges, or a patchy brownish-yellow in older colony parts.

Picture taken off GOPRO 086

Confirmed by Dennis Gordon NIWA 7 November 17

The identification refers to the white colouring on the ecklonia radiata - which is an encrusting bryozoan.

See pg 30 of NIWA Bryozoan Guide also.
