This starfish caught my attention because it was releasing a weird pink substance... Quite a few other starfish were right near the surface over low tide.

Description

A fairly large weta , body length around 6-7cm long. Was found floating in Snowflake stream, Coastal Kaikoura Mountains. It appeared to be dead but returned to life after being kept in a jar for quite a while. Several more dead ones were found on the bottom of the stream.

Description

This insect was flying around inside by a light, was captured in a jar. Then I went outside and harvested some leaves for a more interesting backdrop.

The insect was about the size of a 10 cent coin.

Description

Bird about the size of a Partridge, look like it was feeding among the flax leaves. Was quite calm and did not spook when I kayaked pass twice... did slowly walk away, but was within a couple of meters of it.

Photo was taken with my phone, hence the terrible quality. Whenever I do not bring my camera I miss out on great photos.

Never seen one before.

Description

This little critter was very very small, maybe 2mm long. Was on the bark of a old native tree in Onamalutu reserve. Only saw one of them despite spending about 40 minutes searching a range of trees and scrubs for critters worthy of a photo.

I guess its a type of Aphid?

Description

Found a group of these moths resting on rocks next to a small stream in the headwaters of the Wairau river.

When I first saw them shortly after dark several seemed to be 'mating', when I returned a few minutes later they have all separated.

Description

Called into a rest area to see if any birds were about and saw this weird one with two chicks. Looks like a Shag wearing drag, or maybe a cross between a Shag and a Paradise duck.

But I suspect its a Crested Grebe a bird I have never seen before (apart from in photos).

Description

These small insect which I assume are bees were seen entering and leaving through cracks and holes in the ground on a hot summers morning. Probably saw 20-30 of them with burrows in a area of just under a square meter. The 'hive' was in a area of bare soil.

They were about third the size of a typical honey bee.

Baby Skylarks found in long grass. I actually found the nest then a few days later returned to photograph the chicks after they hatched. Checked again a few days later and the nest was empty :(

Saw this large fellow working the flowers on a Manuka/kanuka scrub. Was about the same size as a queen bumble bee. Saw only one specimen but there was a lot of other similar insects also working the flowers.

Description

Creepy looking spider which was walking over a moist bank... Also nearby was a different looking but similar size spider in a web, and a Slug. The creepy spider completely ignore the spider and stepped across it. It was also investigating 'holes', maybe to escape my light or.

The spider was a couple of cm long including legs.

Two of them resting on rock amour which was part of a breakwater. Neither were active, one even crawled over my fingers for a while until I coached it back onto the rocks for more photographs. Was quite a chilly winters day. Maybe they hatched thanks to the warmer then usual weather then got caught by the cold.

Description

The storm gusts were to powerful for this forest of Pines. Many were blown over, snapped or shredded of their leaves.

There was several other areas of downed pines nearby.
