Once thought to be a chytrid, it was realized it is not. The anterior, tinsel flagellum places it with the oomycetes. It's similarity to the genus Catenaria yields the specific epithet of catenoides. Recovered off pine pollen.

Identification is based off morphology and a partial 28s rRNA gene sequence.
It exists as a pure culture in the University of Alabama culture collection.
