A light microscopic image of the Radiolaria Phaeodaria, genus Protocystis sp. The species is at this time not determined, as it may be a new and undescribed species (Demetrio Boltovskoy, pers. communication). The order Phaeodaria (family = Challengeridae) are wholly marine, solitary (except for two generic exceptions) planktonic Radiolarians. The skeletal elements are mainly composed of opal (SiO2), as most often hollow tubes, compared to the Polycystina with solid bars. Specimen collected during a plankton tow in the Trincomali Channel, north end of Gaiano Island, Gulf Islands, near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, January 18, 2006.
