Description

I was surprised to see ice crystals formed on the Bull Kelp which had washed ashore. It's been so cold, and the kelp was in the shade on the beach. Nothing else had crystals, so I wonder if they were formed from some chemical emitted from the kelp? Once I saw "Silky Hair Ice," which looks like white cotton candy, formed when carbon dioxide made by fungi pushes filaments of ice from logs under certain cold conditions. Here are 5 photos.

Description from Wikipedia

The Chromista are a eukaryotic supergroup, probably polyphyletic, which may be treated as a separate kingdom or included among the Protista. They include all algae whose chloroplasts contain chlorophylls a and c, as well as various colorless forms that are closely related to them. These are surrounded by four membranes, and are believed to have been acquired from some red algae.
