The Mugiliformes are an order of ray-finned fishes, sometime considered as suborder Mugiloidei in the Perciformes order. It includes a sole family, Mugilidae. It is known since the Eocene. The representatives of the order are characterised by two short divided dorsal fins. Their scales are ctenoid or cycloid, covering not only the body, but also the head. Their eggs are small and pelagic. They are widespread in tropical and subtropical marine waters, where they are detritofagous...
